Early Intervention at it’s Best
Dina School has become part of everyday life within our schools in Drogheda and Dundalk. The significant benefits to children’s social, emotional and in turn academic competencies have been reported by teachers and Principals alike. Prevention and Early Intervention is at the very core of the Small Group Dina Programme.
We are delighted that CAMHS (Child and Adolescence Mental Health Service) have now come on board to deliver Small Group Dina to a small cohort of children within their service.
Caitlin McKinley, Principal Social Worker with CAMHS, has stated the importance of Early Intervention within CAMHS:
‘The Incredible Years® Small Group Dina treatment programme enables CAMHS to work with younger children who may present with problems such as ADHD, poor social skills or who may be at risk of developing oppositional defiant or conduct disorders. Young children can experience emotional difficulties that can interfere with the way they think, feel and act. When these difficulties and those mentioned above are not addressed at an early stage this can lead to further difficulties at home, in school and in the community. The Small Group Dina Programmes aim is to develop ways of intervening before the problem becomes more severe and reduces the risk of problems developing rather than intervening when the problems arise. Parents/guardians are updated on what the children learn in the programme so this can then be implemented in the home environment which in turn has a positive impact on the parent child relationship. It is an evidenced based intervention and can be evaluated at the end of the group to ensure good practice and evaluate progress that has been made by the children who attend’.
CAMHS are now also delivering a Parent Programme, with Caitlin jointly leading a programme with Yvonne Forde from The Genesis Programme. This is being run from the SNAP (Special Needs Active Parents) Office in Lios Dubh, Armagh Road, Dundalk.
